Dear Friends
Key features of every big golf tournament these days are the
“Quiet Please!” signs
issued to the army of marshals who patrol tees, fairways and greens all round the
course. It often seems to give them great power and woe betide you if you cough,
sneeze or worse just when a player is about to take a shot.
The well-known Christmas carol “Silent Night” seeks to conjure up the same sort of image: Mary, Joseph, animals, rough smelly shed and city of Bethlehem are all quiet and calm as the child promised for centuries comes into the world.
Well we don’t know what the noise levels were like in the city of Bethlehem that day when Jesus was born, nor in that poor setting of the stable or cave, but what we do know is that someone was certainly not being silent in the whole event.
